Phonics In First Grade

The most important things to remember when teaching phonics are:
  1. Be explicit and complete.
      • I never skip phonics, ever.
      • Even if it seems like most of the class "has it", I still have them write using the sound.
      • Writing it: can they write it at the word level? (cat, hat, sat)
      • Writing It: Can they write it in context (The black cat is sitting on a mat)?
  2. Cycle back to short vowels (again) in December for your low readers.
      • The emerging readers in your class were probably not ready in kinder or the start of first, but they are ready in Dec.
      • (Use my roll, read, and write shown below for high impact practice with low teacher prep / involvement)
  3. Be aware of language needs. Cat in English is gato in spanish, so review the pictures and English words that match.
  4. Practice pronunciation.
      • E and I as short vowels can be alarmingly similar to the ear of a child if their mouth is not making the sounds properly.
  5. Let kids practice in both receptive and expressive ways.
      • Remember literacy is like breathing. Reading is breathing in and writing is breathing out. So their phonics practice should include reading and writing. ENTER the incredibly engaging resources below!

Kids write their own sentence using one of the words on the page to promote student investment and allow for  expressive writing practice.
